Brief Overview of the Quran


 
The Quran is the book of Allah Almighty that was revealed on the last messenger Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The literal translation of the word Quran is ‘recitation’.The Quranic verses were revealed to the Holy Prophet from Allah through angel Jibreel. The Quran is the holy book of Muslims and the purpose of its revelation is the guidance of mankind. 



Revelation


The Holy Prophet (SAW) was 40 years of age when the few verses of the Quran were first revealed to him. The process of revelation continued for 23 years and during the revelation, the companions of the Prophet would write down or memorize the revealed verse. The verses of the Quran were compiled in the form of a book by the companions of the Prophet. 

Arrangement of Chapters in the Quran


The Quran is divided into 114 chapters that are called ‘Surah’.
Each surah contains verses that are called ‘Ayahs”. There are 6236 ayat in the Quran. 
The surahs revealed during the Meccan period, before the Prophet (SAW) migrated to Madinah are called ‘Makki Surahs’. 86 of the total numbers of Surahs are the Makki surahs
There are 28 surahs revealed after migration to Madinah and are called Medinan Surahs 

Purpose


The Quran was revealed to convey the message of Allah Almighty. The Quran helps mankind to differentiate between wrong and right. It provides the basic laws of life and encourages people to act accordingly. To fulfill the divine purpose of the creation of mankind, an in-depth study of the Quran is a crucial need.
